Low water levels on the Rhine continue to create challenges for inland shipping and European supply chains. Although recent rainfall has brought some relief, water levels remain significantly below normal, including on the Lower Rhine around Duisburg.
Vessels are forced to operate with substantially reduced cargo loads. This reduces available transport capacity and causes longer lead times. Logistics companies are forced to apply low-water surcharges to customers.
The situation is particularly relevant for the chemical industry, which relies heavily on the Rhine for the transportation of raw materials and bulk chemicals.
With water levels expected to remain challenging in the coming weeks, logistics costs and available barge capacity may remain under pressure into September.
